A Journey Through Time
Our cultural adventure begins north of the Philippines, a place that is deeply committed to preserving age-old traditions.
Ilocos is well known for its historical sites and landmarks that provides a glimpse of Philippines' colonial past. The Historic City of Vigan, a popular tourist destination in the region, is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Walking through the streets of this historic city feels like a step back in time with its grid street pattern and historic urban layout.
Less than 25 miles away from Vigan is the Santa Maria Church in Ilocos Sur, one of the four Baroque Churches of the Philippines inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993. Built strategically on top of a 60-feet hill, this church is a perfect example of Philippine execution of Baroque architecture that follows European design and construction while using local materials.
Further up north is another UNESCO World Heritage site, one of the four Baroque Churches of the Philippines is the Paoay Church. Built in 1694 to 1710, this church is an example of an Earthquake Baroque architecture with 24 buttresses supporting the brick walls.
Though Ilocos is known for its historical architectural landmark, its most significant cultural heritage undoubtedly lies in its centuries-old weaving tradition called Inabel or Abel Iloco.
Ania ti Inabel? What is Inabel?
